The Judo clinic with Sensei Eb Kieslich was great!!  We worked on basic pinning techniques and variations, escapes to common holddowns and we finished up with some sacrafice throws.  Thanks to Sensei for taking the time to come over and train with us.

Happy New Year to Everyone.  2006 was marked by significant growth in our club.  2007 promises to be even brighter as we will be moving into a new store front E-town location and possibly opening up a new location in Bowling Green.

Saturday, Dec. 16th we will be hosting a Judo groundwork clinic with 6th dan Black Belt Judoka Sensei Eberhard Kieslich.  The clinic will go from 11:00am - 1:00pm and will be free to E-town BJJ and Judo members.  Josh expects a good turnout so make sure you are there if possible. Sensei Kieslich is the premier instructor of Judo in KY.

Congratulations to Instructor Josh Johnson.  On Sunday, December 3rd, Professor Luiz Palhares awarded Josh his black belt after a grueling test.  Josh has been training BJJ for over 10 years!!!  Josh would like to extend this message to everyone: "I would first like to thank Professor Palhares for awarding me the rank of Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  I am honored to have the confidence and respect of someone whom is so well respected in all of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  I plan on living up to the responsibility of being an honorable person on and off the mat.  I have many others to thank.  I would like to thank Brandon Byrd for introducing me to BJJ, Kyle Cannon who was my first real teacher, Troy Turner and Eric Silver who provided me with the first organized classes of BJJ in Louisville and Nashville respectfully, Carlson Gracie Jr. for the wonderful instruction I received from him over the years, and most of all my students at E-town Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo.  When I first began the class in E-town it was with the idea of starting a no-nonsense school of BJJ where we could train hard, improve daily and train Jiu-Jitsu the Brazilian way, without a doubt we have the best BJJ school in KY and I am very proud to train in E-town.  My Jiu-Jitsu has improved more the last 3 years than the previous 7 together.  Thank you all."

Anthony "Furacao" Stanton has been training in Okinawa, Japan.  He has been training with a black belt named Tadashi Sawada.  Anthony is the first American they have ever trained with so both Anthony and his Japanese training partners are excited about it.  Anthony was surprised that they concentrate on so many half guard sweeps.  "Furacao" has rolled with a couple of blue belts that have trained over 7 years!!!!  Hopefully, he will remember some of the techniques (take notes) and show us some cool stuff when he returns in January.

Good friend and former student Robert Frijoles emailed Josh and wanted to send regards to the "old" guys that he trained with when stationed at Knox. Robert is living back home in California and things are going well.

Congratulations to Allan Manganello for receiving the faixa preta (black belt) from Pedro Sauer. Josh talked with Allan and he is very excited. He stated that his first Jiu-Jitsu class was nearly 13 years ago!!! He started the first Jiu-Jitsu academy in Kentucky and has hosted BJJ tournaments in Kentucky for the last 8 years. This makes Allan the second black belt in KY. Mike O'Donnell received his back in July.

Congrats to the new brown belts on the mats in KY. Colin "The Vice" and Kyle "Manster" Cannon were both promoted to brown belt by Mike O'Donnell. The promotions were well deserved.

Sean Wescott made his MMA debut Saturday, October 21st in Bowling Green, KY. Sean fought in the Warrior's Challenge winning with suplex takedown and repeated punches from back mount for the KO victory. Look for Sean and several more members of the E-town Beat Down to fight in January.

We competed in the EGO Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament on Saturday, October 21st in Indianapolis. Adam Arebalo fought a tough match against black belt John Stuzman from Jorge Gurgel's academy, losing via Chave De Braco (armlock) after about 5 minutes. Dirty Dave Gray secured 3rd place in his Adult Blue Belt division winning 14-2 and escaping what looked to be a very tight choke at the end of the match. John Ballard won his no gi division with Chave De Braco from the mount. Joe "Suave" Dibble fought hard against a 315 lb. giant but was unable to pull out the win. Jim Coomer had several close matches but was unable to come away victorious.

We have many tournaments in the upcoming months. We also occasionally have to change or cancel class. If you haven't been to class for awhile or you have missed a week or more it would be a good idea to call Josh before coming to make sure everything is on schedule.

If you have not signed up for the United States Judo Association you need to do so quickly. Without everyone's membership we will not be able to train at the school any longer. The membership is only $40 dollars a year. For details on how to sign up see Josh.

We competed in the 2nd annual Luiz Palhares Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association tournament on Saturday, September 30th in Murfreesboro, TN. We took 9 members down and finished with a record of 21 and 8. Of the 21 victories, 12 were by submission. "Dirty" Dave Gray lead the charge with a record of 6-0 on the day winning his blue belt division and no gi division. He also choked 2 opponents unconscious and another was questionable. Joe "Suave" Dibble went 4-0 winning his blue belt heavy weight gi division. Adam Arebalo, competing with his purple belt for the first time, won his gi and no gi divisions with ease. Anthony Stanton also finished with a 3rd place finish in his no gi division. John Ballard, Junior "cabecao" Dennis, and Jim Coomer all won at least one match. Bobby Cummins and Kyle Slone got their first taste of competition and are ready to train harder than ever for the next one.

Medal tally 5 first place finishes and 1 third place finish.

Matt Morgan emailed Josh to let him know he has finished Basic Training and will now be entering Officer Candidate School.  He is at Fort Benning and will likely be there for a while longer anyway.  The good news is he is healthy and able to train again soon.  Matt says he looks forward to getting back to E-town for some top notch training.  Matt sent this message for his teammates in E-town.  "Congratulations to everyone there on the promotions, I cant wait to get back up there. Your school and team is going to be the place to be in the near future."

Congratulations to Adam Arebalo and Joe Howard.  They received their well deserved purple belts on August 13th from Professor Luiz Palhares.  Everyone in attendance enjoyed administering the beating during the traditional gauntlet for belt promotions.  We have now produced 3 purple belts and 10 blue belts in only 3 years of operation.  Our team has consistently dominated the competition circuit, winning Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and Submission Grappling events and is only growing stronger and stronger!!!

We have some changes for the summer. Josh will be leaving for Brazil on June 9th. Adam will be teaching classes at regular time on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. We have special summer rates. Training for June and July will only be $40 dollars ($20 per month)! That's a 50 percent savings. Payments are due to Adam on the 15th of each month.

In August we will be adding a kids class for kids ages 7-14. Spread the word!

On April 8th we competed in the KY State Judo Championships. With 9 competitors we placed second in the team competition. We had 6 Golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze.
